Personal Review and selection
I am now nearly finished choreographing my piece. I have three main sections correlating with the three bits of music I have chosen to use. As I explained in my previous blog, the first section contains the journey to the new home, the second section containing the monotonous everyday tasks the children had to put up with and the third section containing the reflection about the experience; some of which are positives and also the negatives of being mistreated etc.
One of the main things I wanted to add to my piece was a repetitive phrase that showed my characters feelings and also personality. One of the things Miss Evans and I spoke about in the 1 to 1s was to add a motif that occurs throughout the piece in all three sections that perhaps develops throughout. In the first section I use a foot step where my feet invert and then turn out travelling across the room. I decided to use this in both my other sections but with differing dynamics. In the first section I use this movement slowly in order to symbolise the hesitation and worries about the new environment. I start off with my arms concealing my face to represent the lack of confidence and hesitation. Then I gradually bring them down in order to show the confidence the child had to grow in order to face this tough situation; they had to almost put on a 'brave face' (See video 1).

The next time I use this foot motif was in the second section; the faster, quicker pace section. I perform the movement quicker as well as there being less of them (see video 2) This was to try and symbolise the progression of the character and how they have evolved and become more confident and almost settled in their new “home”. Although this isn’t a good environment, they have still adapted to it and got on with their new daily monotonous life. Finally, I repeat this movement again in the final section (See video 3). I use it to show that the character is reflecting on their past feelings and anxieties towards their experience. I also do this inverted foot step quickly whilst on the floor (see video 4). This is to try and demonstrate the characters development about how they try not to let their past traumas effect them. However, the mistreatment from the past still manages to affect them in the future.
During the final section, I use slower and elongated moments to show the characters' many complex thoughts about their experiences. I perform a repetitive arm movement that I almost used to perhaps symbolise the character taking in and processing all their emotions (See Video 5). It’s like I am collecting the air around me and bringing it towards me to represent bringing in and processing all of my emotions about being evacuated. I repeat this movement standing and also crouching down. The different levels I utilise demonstrate the different ways the character is trying to process the emotions (See Video 6).

I feel the adjustments I need to make to improve my choreography looking back through it all, in detail, and ensuring all the emotions are portrayed correctly and the story line is portrayed accurately. This can ensure that the audience can understand not only what is going on during the piece, but also that they can comprehend the character development.
